Thomas Neylan, MD, is a professor of psychiatry and has been an active researcher in the study of sleep, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and associated mood disorders for the past 24 years. He is a co-investigator for SMART-DAPPER. His current projects examine the role of disturbed sleep on prefrontal executive control and emotion regulation in PTSD, the role of sleep and circadian factors in risk and resilience for developing PTSD in acutely traumatized patients seen in Emergency Departments, a trial examining effects of exercise for PTSD, a case-control study of structural MRI and PET amyloid imaging in older subjects with PTSD and a study of sleep/wake regulation in neurodegenerative tauopathies. He also directs the PTSD Research program at the San Francisco VA Medical Center.
