Dickens Akena, MB, ChB, MMed, is a psychiatrist and a senior lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at the Makerere University College of Health Sciences. He is a co-investigator for SMART-DAPPER. Dr. Akena has been a co-investigator on a number of NIH-funded task-shifted studies: R01 AI099884-01(Wagner), R01 MH083568 (Wagner) and R01MH115830-01A1 (Wagner). The last-listed grant examines the efficacy of task-shifted problem-solving therapy and antidepressant therapy for pregnant and postpartum women with depression. Dr. Akena has been involved in research and clinical work, with a primary interest in depression care, and has published in this area.
